Velleity of the Human Heart

The human will is a curious thing,

A force that can make our hearts sing,

But oftentimes it lies dormant still,

A velleity that lacks the will.

We dream of great deeds and lofty goals,

Of scaling mountains and reaching new horizons,

But when the time comes to take a stand,

We falter, and our will left scattered.

We procrastinate, we hesitate,

We find excuses, we obfuscate,

Our velleity is strong, but our will is weak,

And so our dreams remain unfulfilled.

But hope remains, for though we fall,

Our will can rise again, and stand tall,

We can dust ourselves off and try once more,

And conquer the pain that held us before.

For in the end, it’s not just what we think,

Or the plans we make and the goals we link,

It’s the actions we take that make us real,

And turn our velleity into will.
